How to Have a Relationship with God

Having a relationship with God is simple and begins by knowing these foundational truths:

1. God loves you more than you can conceive, and He wants to have a personal relationship with you!

“Neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39

2. All people fall short of God’s standard of perfection, and that is called sin.  Not one person on the planet is capable of living a life completely without sin.

“Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” – Romans 3:23

3. Sin has consequences, both physical and spiritual.  The spiritual consequence of sin is separation from God and spiritual death.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23

4. God made a way to reconcile people with Himself by Jesus coming to earth and taking the consequence of our sin upon Himself, even though He never sinned.  He took our punishment by suffering and dying in a brutal manner on a Roman cross.

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

Yet after He had been buried, He came back to life on the third day and rose out of His grave!  He had the power to overcome death, both physically and spiritually, because He is God.  Click here to read the full account of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

“He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day” – 1 Corinthians 15:4

5. Jesus’ death and resurrection made it possible for people to be reconciled to God by accepting* Jesus’ payment in our place.  When we confess our sin and need for Him, accept His payment for us, and openly choose to belong to Him, we enter into an inseparable relationship with God.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” – John 14:6

“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” – Romans 10:9-10

[*A small example of what it means to “accept” a payment:  You eat at a restaurant but discover afterward that you have no money to pay, a person sitting nearby offers to pay.  You can either accept their payment for you or reject it and suffer the consequences of being unable to pay.]

What Happens When You Begin a Relationship with God

When you believe and accept what Jesus did for you, and make your choice to follow Him known, three primary things happen:
1. You are no longer separated from God and have personal access to know Him
2. You are given spiritual life for all of eternity
3. God puts His Holy Spirit inside of you to teach and empower you in your life on earth
