rustic farmhouse living room decor

While some people are more creatively gifted than others when it comes to decorating, everyone gets “decorator’s block” on occasion.  What can you do when your house needs some decorating help?  Here are 11 tips to get you started sprucing up an uninspired home.  As you try each tip, chances are you’ll get in the creative zone and more ideas will come to you!

1. Freshen up furniture with paint.  A new color on an old piece of furniture gives it new life, and you can customize it to fit any decorating palette.  Painting old furniture has the added benefit of saving money instead of buying a new piece of furniture.  Sometimes stripping furniture can make it look amazing too! Check out my friend’s experience bleaching her table. It looks fantastic!

2. Add plants and greenery.  Plants give any room a more cozy, livable vibe.  Faux plants are a maintenance free (and completely legit) way to liven up a room.  Living plants take a little more effort to keep looking nice, but they have the added health benefits of cleaning the air inside your home.  Either way, you can’t go wrong with adding plants to a room.

3. Add throw pillows.  Pillows easily give character to a room.  They can make a space feel sedate and cozy or wild and lively.  Pillows can be changed out for seasons or holidays, as well.

4. Create a gallery wall or set of matching prints.  Sometimes large wall spaces can feel blank and blah.  Use photos, clocks, signs, and other decorative hanging items to create a visually interesting gallery wall.  Feel free to use painter’s tape or cardboard in the shape and size of each item to plan out how your wall will look instead of putting a bunch of unnecessary holes in your wall (not that I have ever done that- wink).

5. Fresh flowers.  Fresh flowers liven up any room and add the perfect pop of beauty whether your decorating style is farmhouse or modern.  Okay, keeping fresh flowers constantly in your home can be pricey, so you can substitute with well-chosen faux flowers or make fresh bouquets an occasional treat.  There are great companies like Petal Driven, that deliver amazing fresh cut flowers right to your door. This is not sponsored, I just love what they offer!

6. Add a grouping of decorations you love to a shelf or table.  You don’t have to add a lot to give interest to your room.  Sometimes a grouping of three well-chosen items gives a room the pop it needs.

7. Signs.  There are so many cute signs out there!  Instagram is filled with amazing custom sign makers or craft stores like Hobby Lobby sell cute ones inexpensively.  Signs draw people’s attention and add character to any space. Decorating with signs is also a great way to add scripture or positive quotes to your home. Here’s an example of great custom signs!

8. Play with what you have.  Rehoming an item from one room to another gives fresh life to the item and your perspective.  You may find you have a lot of décor that can feel completely new when you use it in a new area or for a new purpose.

9. Add unique or vintage items.  Vintage items give a room character and charm.  Unique items give a space personality and make for great conversation starters.  City art walks, farmer’s markets and art co-ops can have some really fun pieces of art or furniture created in a unique way.

10. Try a new wall color or texture.  Not everyone can put up shiplap or wallpaper, but nearly anyone can paint a wall.  Trying a new color on one or all walls in a room can give a pop of personality or set a different ambience.  If you can do shiplap or paneling, go for it. Shiplap adds character to any space! Adding starched fabric to a wall is another idea that looks amazing, though I have never tried it myself. I’m too afraid that after all the work getting it up, my toddler would color or paint on it. Eek.

11. Go extreme.  Completely change the entire layout of your furniture.  If you like it, keep it!  The new perspective can help with creative ideas for decorating.  If you prefer the old way, simply move it back.  The act of moving it out of place and putting it back will still help you see the space through new eyes.  The fresh outlook can give you the creative boost you need to spice up your space!

Happy decorating!
